How to make your wigs look super natural

If you’re a beginner with wigs and have no idea how to make your wigs look super natural, keep reading. Check below for common questions related to this topic and my answers.

When it comes to blending your wigs and making them mimic a natural hairline, the following are important:

MAKE SURE THE LACE ON YOUR WIG MATCHES YOUR COMPLEXION:

There are various types of lace shades available in the lace wig market but the most commonly known lace shades are:

  1. Transparent: Transparent lace is the lightest shade available in the lace wig market. Transparent shade usually has a light nude/ beige undertone.
  2. Light Brown: Light Brown lace is a little bit darker than transparent lace and has a brown undertone.
  3. Medium Brown: Medium Brown lace is usually the darkest lace available in the hair market and has a cocoa brown undertone.

Some suppliers provide other shades so it is important to check with them what they have available before purchasing.

There is also the process of applying matching foundation/ powders or tinting your lace to make it match your complexion better.

THE THINNER THE LACE THE BETTER:

There are various types of lace material in the wig market:

  1. The most common type of lace available is known as Swiss Lace. This lace is usually a bit thick and very durable.
  2. There is also another type of lace known as French Lace. This lace is similar to Swiss lace but a bit thicker.
  3. Another type of lace available is the Silk-base Lace. This lace is usually made with a silk material in the crown area and then the sides are comprised of swiss/ French lace.
  4. Another very popular lace material is HD Lace. This lace is also referred to as Invisible lace.

For marketing purposes, a lot of companies will label their lace differently so it is best to always check pictures of lace, if you can, before purchasing, so you can be sure it is the lace you desire.

The real tea about lace:

At the end of the day it is crucial to remember that a lace wig is material so will always be visible to others if they are super close to you. However, the thinner the lace, the harder it will be to detect it. If you have a wig made with thin lace and its a lace shade that matches your complexion, then hunny you will have MAJORITY of people fooled into thinking your lace is your scalp! One thing to consider with thinner lace is that they can tear easily if you do not manage them well. Always take care when handling thinner lace. With that being said, thick lace can also look natural as long as you know how to style it well.

Important reminder:

It is important to remember two main things when purchasing lace – the material and the colour. These are separate categories. What I mean by this is, if a vendor says they sell Transparent lace, that is referring to the colour of the lace. It is now up to you to check the material of the lace (i.e. swiss, French, silk top or HD/ invisible).

PRE-PLUCKED HAIRLINE IS ESSENTIAL:

If you want to create the impression of a natural hairline, the hairline on your wig should be a low density (i.e. thinner than the rest of your wig). The good thing is, most companies provide pre-plucked lace so you should be able to skip this step unless you want to pluck it more to your liking.

BLEACHED KNOTS:

Bleached knots is a process that involves applying bleach to all the little dark knots from ventilated hair on your lace to a lighter shade. The purpose of doing this is to make the lace look like your scalp. To achieve this all the little dark knots on your wig should match the lace to help create a scalp appearance. The closer you can get the knots to match your lace, the better. If the knots are too light for your complexion, this is where tinting the lace or applying makeup comes in handy. The process of bleaching knots is not needed for wigs made with light-colored hair (i.e. blonde, pastel shades etc.).

How we can help:

We at Lux Beauty Essentials provide this service of bleaching the knots so you wont have to. This method is useful if you want your wig to look super natural and give the scalp-like appearance. Bleaching knots is a permanent method so after each wash day, the bleached knots will still be present. If you prefer not to bleach the knots on your wigs, you can apply makeup on the lace but this will need to be re-applied after every washday and sometimes before you install the wig. In some cases, bleached knots can lead to shedding of the hair from the lace but in order to prevent excessive shedding, do not tug at the hair on the lace too hard and use a knot sealant spray. We also provide pre-plucked wigs that come styled so you have less work to do! When it comes to making your wigs look super natural we lay this foundation for you. TAKE AWAY NOTES:

1. It is all about finding a lace that matches your complexion!

2. Choose a thinner lace for a more undetectable look

3. A plucked hairline is crucial!

4. Bleach the knots to create a scalp-like appearance

All the above are crucial in making your wig look super natural!

COMMON QUESTIONS:

What should I do if I receive a lace that is too light for me?

There are a few things you could do to make the lace darker:

  1. Use Lace Tint Spray. There are many companies that sell this product so you can purchase a ready made lace tint spray for your lace.
  2. Create your own Lace Tint Spray. There are multiple videos on YouTube and Instagram showing you how to create your own Lace Tint Spray formula. Most methods include using hair dye or fabric dye that matches your complexion.
  3. Use make up that matches your complexion. This is the easiest method but bare in mind that you may need to apply your makeup frequently , especially after washing your wig.
What should I do if I receive a lace that is too dark for me?

  2. There are other methods on YouTube that involve bleaching the lace but take care with this method as it could ruin your lace.
  3. You can also consider adding baby hairs to your hairstyle to cover the line of demarcation that may show between the dark lace and your complexion.
What can I do to make the hairline on my wig thinner?

You will need some sharp tweezers and a thin-toothed comb. Part 1 inch behind the hairline on your wig, start plucking in a random fashion until you feel satisfied with the result. Don’t pluck in the same area for too long as this could lead to creating a large bald spot. REMEMBER IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO UNDERPLUCK THAN OVERPLUCK. Now pluck away a small amount from the 1 inch section that was parted away. Comb away the plucked hair with the thin-toothed comb to see the results clearer. Repeat these steps until you have your desired hairline.

I have bleached the knots on my wig but there is a slight orange/ brassy undertone?

In order to get rid of this you will need to wash the lace with any purple-based shampoo. You can leave this shampoo on the lace for 10-20 minutes for extra effect.
