How to wash a wig in 5 easy steps

For wig longevity or to restore an old wig, knowing how to wash you a wig in 5 easy steps is ESSENTIALS! Before we get to the 5 steps for washing your wig it is essential you have the CORRECT tools for a smooth PROCESS!

TOOLS NEEDED FOR WASHING YOUR WIG:

• A wide tooth comb and denman brush

For detangling your wig so the shampoo and conditioner can penetrate the strands of hair as deep as it possibly can. The denman brush is also great for defining curl patterns during the washing process. We sell both items and they are known as the Lux Denman Brush and Lux Wide Tooth Comb.

• Hair clips

You need these for sectioning your wig when detangling. You can grab some Lux Butterfly clips for this job.

• Shampoo designed for wigs

Regular shampoo for washing hair attached to a human scalp is designed to strip oils, since we naturally produce oils from our scalp on a daily basis. 

Human hair wigs are created with ‘dead’ human hair and so they do not produce natural oils. If you use regular shampoo which is designed for ‘live’ human hair on a wig, it will essentially strip away at hair. 

In addition to this, most shampoos created for ‘live’ human hair contain harsh chemicals such as sulphate and parabens. If used on your wigs, these can cause dryness in your wigs and leave it feeling dull. 

More than anything wigs need EXTRA MOISTURE in order to replenish it and make it feel as soft as though it were your own hair!

KEEP YOUR LOVELY WIGS LOOKING AS GOOD AS NEW BY FOLLOWING THESE 5 STEPS:

• 1. Remove any tangles from your wig using a wide tooth comb like the Lux Wide Tooth Comb. The best way to detangle your wig is to do it in sections. Also start the combing motion from the ends and work you way up to the roots, remembering to be extra careful around the lace area.

• 2. Under running warm water, immerse your wig and make sure it gets completed soaked with water. Now reach for 2-3 pumps of the Lux Care Shampoo, lather it in your hands and apply onto the wig. Now rub the shampoo into the wig but to do very gently. Rub the shampoo into the hair on the wig for approximately 2 minutes. Also do the same for the INSIDE of the wig cap, to get rid off any oils trapped in the cap.

• 3. Rinse out the wig under warm water until the water runs clear. Repeat step 2 again if your wig needs more cleaning! Towel dry your wig to get rid of some excess water.

• 4. Saturate your wig with the Lux Care Conditioner. Apply however much conditioner you this is necessary. This step is crucial and helps add intense moisture to your wig! Leave the conditioner on for 1-2 minutes. During these few minutes, first detangle your wig from the ends working your way to the root with the Lux Wide Tooth Comb. Follow up with the Lux Denman Brush. BE CAREFUL WHEN DETANGLING NEAR THE LACE ON YOUR WIG!

• 5. Thoroughly rinse off the conditioner with luke warm water. Luke warm/ cold water helps lock in the moisture from the conditioner. After towel-drying your wig to get rid of excess water, you can either leave you wig to air dry on a canvas/ mannequin head or you can get it ready for blow-drying. Before doing either of these, apply 1-2 pumps of the Lux Care Serum and a few sprays of the Lux Care Protectant Spray. Both of these products add shine to your wig, helps reduce humidity and gives you ultra silky results!
